...in questi anni di BostonOssessione, ho avuto l'onore ed il piacere di conoscere, seppur virtualmente, molti stimati e famosi allevatori da tutto il mondo. Ho domandato ad alcuni di loro, di avere la possibilità di poterli intervistare, parlandoci appunto della razza e, molti di loro hanno accettato con entusiasmo di collaborare a questo mio progetto, così ogni mese pubblicherò la rubrica: "L'allevatore del mese”!

1) Innanzitutto grazie, è un piacere ed un onore poterla intervistare! Direi di cominciare dal principio…ci racconti un po’ la sua storia, come e quando si è appassionato alla razza?
Sono cresciuta con i cani, ricordo che nella mia famiglia abbiamo sempre avuto almeno un cane con noi. Dopo la scuola mi sono trasferita in un appartamento del centro di Zurigo. Ho dovuto vivere senza cani per diversi anni, oltre a studio e il lavoro non c'era tempo per un cane nella mia vita. Dopo qualche anno ho iniziato a lavorare nel mio negozio e ho pensato che quello fosse il momento giusto per avere nuovamente un compagno a quattro zampe. Un mio amico aveva un simpatico bulldog francese, che era macchiato come un Boston Terrier. Ero sicura che fosse la razza giusta per me, ma il mio compagno non era convinto. Voleva un cane più elegante. Così iniziò la nostra ricerca e tutto ad un tratto apparve questa foto sul mio schermo. Un bel musino mi osservava, lo ricordo ancora come fosse ieri. Il nome di quel cane era Ch. Kennedy Tuckered by the Storm e fu amore a prima vista. Circa un anno e mezzo dopo, nel 2007, riuscii ad ottenere il mio primo Boston Terrier da un allevatore in Svizzera. Pumpink si è rivelata essere una fantastica compagna ed io la amo dal profondo del mio cuore. Questo fu l'inizio di una fantastica avventura.

2) Quando invece ha deciso di allevare? Quali sono stati i suoi primi cani da show e da riproduzione?
Nel 2008, quando abbiamo ottenuto la nostra seconda femmina, ci siamo trasferiti di nuovo in campagna dove sono cresciuta e da lì in poi il pensiero di allevare questi cani si fece sempre più forte. L'allevatore delle mie due femmine non ha esposto i suoi soggetti nelle esposizioni di bellezza così anch’io non conoscevo quel mondo. Nella mia vita non ho mai iniziato qualcosa senza essermi preparata prima, così ho iniziato a visitare alcune esposizioni in Svizzera e pensai potesse essere una cosa divertente, ma nel profondo del mio cuore sapevo che le mie femmine non erano ben predisposte, così preferii non farle partecipare. Devo ringraziare Facebook, poichè verso la fine del 2009 o all'inizio del 2010, ho conosciuto Coreen Zygar (Sulfity Boston Terrier Kennel, Canada). La sua cagna Tyra ha rubato il mio cuore...lei mi ricordava tanto la mia Pumpink. Abbiamo iniziato a chiacchierare e questo fu l'inizio di una meravigliosa amicizia e collaborazione. Fortunatamente, sono riuscita ad ottenere il mio primo cucciolo da show da Coreen. Ho preso la mia Candy (Sulfity's Canadian Swiss Miss) nel dicembre 2010 presso Coreen. Purtroppo però Candy odiava le esposizioni di bellezza...
Nel 2011 abbiamo avuto le nostre prime due cucciolate con le nostre femmine: Pumpink (Carmel of residential Carmel) and Peanut (D’Romy of residential Carmel). Dobbiamo ringraziare Patrick e Sandra Radureau che ci hanno permesso di usare il loro bel maschio Ch. T-Bo Dandy Diamond. Di queste cucciolate abbiamo deciso di tenere una femmina: Lexi alias Bijou de Paris vom Graustein. Nello stesso tempo in cui nasceva la nostra cucciolata “A”, il nostro amico Ann Mynard (Andridz Boston Terrier, Inghilterra), ha avuto una cucciolata anche lui con Ch.T-Bo’s Dandy Diamond e la sua bella femmina Ch. Andridz Wicked Wilma e da lì siamo abbiamo ottenuto il nostro primo maschio: Elliot alias Andridz Dandy's Elite.
Con Lexi ed Elliot ho ottenuto il mio primo “ Showteam". Abbiamo iniziato nel 2012 e nel 2013 è arrivato il nostro 2° maschio: Chilli Am./Can. Ch. Sulfity’s Be Cool si è quindi unito a noi. Sono molto grato per tutto quello che abbiamo ottenuto fino ad ora. Questo non sarebbe stato possibile senza l'aiuto e la fiducia di Coreen, Ann, Sandra e Patrick. Grazie!

3) Secondo lei quali sono i punti di forza ed i punti di debolezza di questa razza?
La loro forza è che sono i migliori compagni di sempre e la loro debolezza è, che sanno cosa fare per ottenere tutto quello che vogliono.
4) Quali consigli può dare a chi si avvicina per la prima volta ai BT?
Io vorrei avvisarli che i Boston Terrier creano dipendenza....uno non è mai abbastanza.
5) Ci sono molti modi per alimentare un cane…lei cosa usa?
Diamo loro una dieta cruda, ma per i nostri cani usiamo anche cibo secco senza cereali prodotte qui in Svizzera.
6) Riuscirebbe a fare il punto sulla razza? Ci sono degli aspetti da migliorare ed altri a cui fare attenzione?

Parlando di conformazione desidererei vedere più eleganza, una femmina dovrebbe apparire come una femmina e un maschio come un maschio. Mi piace vedere una testa quadrata con belle inserzione delle orecchie, occhi rotondi e scuri. Qui in Europa ho la sensazione che dobbiamo lavorare per avere teste di qualità. Non mi piace vedere le teste di "tipo terrier". Naturalmente la salute è sempre importante in un soggetto, ma a mio parere non è una giustificazione per allevare fuori dallo standard.
Inoltre penso che dovremmo lavorare su angolazioni in generale, vedo cani con la parte superiore degli arti troppo corte e quando si tratta di angolazioni posteriori ho la sensazione che siamo sulla strada: "tanto più, tanto meglio”, quando invece dovrebbero essere moderata, così come richiesto dallo standard.

7) Cosa si sentirebbe di consigliare a chi vorrebbe allevare questa razza?
A mio parere è molto importante avere conoscenze di anatomia e di capire lo standard. Bisognerebbe iniziare a usare cani sani, di buona tipologia e con un temperamento fantastico. Non scegliere i tuoi stalloni solo perché sono il Top dei vincitori . Siate rigorosi nelle vostre valutazioni e accettate il fatto che che nessuno può essere perfetto, ma si dovrebbe migliorare con ogni generazione. Non tutti i cuccioli, per quanto possano fartvi "sciogliere il tuo cuore", dovrebbero andare in un programma di allevamento. Devi essere il critico più acuto quando si tratta di valutare i vostri propri cani.
8) I suoi progetti per il futuro?
Siamo solo all'inizio e ci sono molti progetti per il futuro e degli obiettivi che ci piacerebbe realizzare. Ma lo faremo lentamente ,passo dopo passo. Recentemente abbiamo iniziato a esporre la nostra 2° generazione e vedremo cosa il futuro porterà con sé. Ho nella mente l’immagine di quel perfetto (a mio parere) Boston Terrier e finché io non lo/la vedrò lì nella mia casa parto, vuol dire che avremo ancora un sacco di lavoro da fare e sono molto felice di avere i migliori amici oltre a me, che camminano sulla stessa strada.

1) First of all, it’s my pleasure to interview you. Let’s start from the beginning. Tell us your story, when and how did you fall in love with the BT breed?
I grew up with dogs, as long as I can remember we always had at least one dog living with us. After school I moved into an appartment downtown zurich. I had to live without dogs for several years, besides studies and work there was no time for a dog in my life. After a few years I started to work self emplyed in my own shop and I thought this is the right time for a four legged companion. A friend of mine got a cute French Bulldog, who was marked as a Boston Terrier. I was sure that was the right breed for me but my partner wasn’t convinced. He wanted a more elegant dog. So the research began and all of a sudden there was this pic on my screen. A beautiful face was looking at me, I remeber it like yesterday. The name of that dog was Ch. Kennedy’s Tuckered by the Storm and I was in love. About one and a half years later, in 2007, I got my first Boston Terrier from a breeder in Switzerland. Pumpkin turned out to be such a fantastic companion and I love her from the bottom of my heart. she was and still is the beginning of a fantastic adventure.
2) When did you start breeding? Which ones were your first dogs for shows and reproduction?
In 2008 when we got our second female, we moved back to the countryside where I grew up and then the thoughts of breeding came up. The breeder of my two girls didn’t show at all so I didn’t know much about it. As I never start something without beeing prepared I started to visit few shows in switzerland and thought this was fun but deep in my heart I knew my girls wouldn’t like doing it so I didn’t enter them. I have to thank Facebook, then in late 2009 or early 2010 I met Coreen Zygar from Sulfity’s Boston Terriers, Canada. Her bitch Tyra stole my heart as she reminded me so much of Pumpkin. We started chatting and this was the beginning of a wonderful friend- and partnership. Lucky me, I got my first show puppy from Coreen. I picked up my Candy (Sulfity’s Canadian Swiss Miss) in December 2010 at Coreen’s. Unfortunately Candy hated showing like hell...2011 we have had our first two litters with our females Pumpkin (Carmel of residential Carmel) and Peanut (D’Romy of residential Carmel). We have to thank Patrick and Sandra Radureau who let us use their heartbreaker male Ch. T-Bo’s Dandy Diamonds. Out of those litters we kept a girl, Lexi aka Bijou de Paris vom Graustein. Around the same time as our A-litter was born, our friend Ann Mynard from Andridz Boston Terriers, England, has also had a litter with Dandy and her beautiful female Ch. Andridz Wicked Wilma and we were able to get our first male Elliot aka Andridz Dandy’s Elite from her. With Lexi and Elliot I had my first Showteam. We 3 started in 2012 and 2013 our 2nd male Chilli, Am./Can. Ch. Sulfity’s Be Cool joined us. I’m very thankful for everything we achieved so far. Wouldn’t have been possible without the help and trust of Coreen, Ann, Sandra and Patrick. Thank you!
3) In your opinion, what are the strength and weakness of the breed?
Their strenght is that they’re the best companions ever and their weakness is, that they exactly know what to do to get everything they want.4) What advice would you give to the person that approaches this breed for the very first time?
I’d warn them that they’re addictive than one Boston Terrier is never enough.5) There are many ways to feed your dog. What kind of food do you use?
We feed a raw diet but our dogs are also used to a grain free swiss made kibble.
6) Could you give us a general look on the breed? Are there any aspects to improve and others to pay attention at?
Talking about conformation I’d wish for more elegance, a female should look like a female and a male like a male. I love to see a square head with a nice earset and dark round eyes. Here in Europe I have the feeling that we have to strive for quality heads. I don’t like to see terrier type heads. Of course health is always a subject but in my opinion it’s not an argument to breed away from the standard. Also I think we should work on angulations in general, too many too short upper arms and when it comes to the rear angulations I have the feeling that we’re on the way ‚the more, the better’ instead of moderate as asked in the standard.
7) What would you say to someone that would like to start breeding Boston Terriers?
In my opinion it is very important to have knowledge in anatomy and to understand the standard. when you start use healthy, typy dogs with a fantastic temperament. Do not choose your studs because they’re the top winners. Be strict in your evaluations and accept that no one can be perfect but you should improve with every generation. Not every puppy, as much as it may melt your heart, has to go into a breeding program. Be the sharpest critic when it comes to your own dogs.
8) Any projects for the future?
As we’re just in the beginning there are many future projects and goals we’d love to achieve. But we will take it slowly step by step. We recently started showing our 2nd generation and will see what future brings. I have that picture of the perfect (in my own opinion) Boston Terrier in my mind an das long as I don’t see him/her walking in my whelping box we will have a lot of work to do and I’m very happy to have the best friends besides me who are walking on the same path.
