...in questi anni di BostonOssessione, ho avuto l'onore ed il piacere di conoscere, seppur virtualmente, molti stimati e famosi allevatori da tutto il mondo. Ho domandato ad alcuni di loro, di avere la possibilità di poterli intervistare, parlandoci appunto della razza e, molti di loro hanno accettato con entusiasmo di collaborare a questo mio progetto, così ogni mese pubblicherò la rubrica: "L'allevatore del mese”!

1) Innanzitutto grazie, è un piacere ed un onore poterla intervistare! Direi di cominciare dal principio…ci racconti un po’ la sua storia, come e quando si è appassionato alla razza?
Ho avuto la fortuna di essere nata in una famiglia di amanti del Boston Terrier. Sono da quattro generazioni che la mia famiglia possiede questa meravigliosa razza. La mia Bis nonna allevava Bostons nel 1920. Mi auguro che i miei figli porteranno avanti il nome Weywood. Per tutto il tempo che riesco ricordare, c'è sempre stato un Boston nella mia vita.

2) Quando invece ha deciso di allevare? Quali sono stati i suoi primi cani da show e da riproduzione?
Ho ottenuto il mio proprio vero Boston, Jade, nel 1996. Non era un cane da esposizione, ma lei era una parte importante della nostra famiglia. Amava i bambini ed era solita dare il benvenuto a tutti i neonati che arrivavano a casa dall'ospedale. Sono cresciuta esponendo ed allevando cavalli e capre. Mi mancava la competizione e la sfida di allevare ed esporre di splendidi animali. Così nel 1998, ho acquistato un maschio allevato da Karen Bogenholm. Il suo nome era Bobby: Ch. Kc's High Faluten Captain Lui fu il mio maschio capostipide. Nel 1999, acquistai una bella femmina tigrata: Mibolynn's Audrey H. of Weywood detta Audrey. Quanfo fu finalmente accoppiata con Bobby, fu l'inizio della linea dei Bostons Weywood. Il primo campione da me allevato fu: Ch. Weywood's Chanilly detta Lace, una figlia appunto di Bobby x Audrey.

3) Secondo lei quali sono i punti di forza ed i punti di debolezza di questa razza?
Penso che, da quando ho iniziato ad esporre, i posteriori sono molto più forti e anche gli anteriori sono molto meglio. E’ bello vedere più gente che controlla i cani con i test sulla salute.
Quando ho iniziato ad allevare, il controllo dell'udito e l’esame della cataratta giovanile non erano disponibili oppure molto difficile da trovare. Erano molto pochi gli allevatori "di lunga durata” che eseguivano test agli occhi o della rotula.
Ritengo che gli allevatori dovrebbero continuare il loro lavoro sulla struttura del Boston, ma hanno anche bisogno di concentrarsi un po’ di più sulla corretta costruzione della testa e degli occhi. Ci sono pochissimi bostons con testa ed occhi corretti. È molto raro vedere l'occhio grande e scuro. La maggior parte bostons mancano inoltre di profondità dello stop e della larghezza del muso.
4) Quali consigli può dare a chi si avvicina per la prima volta ai BT?
Questa è una razza da compagnia e il bostons dovrebbe essere una razza vivace e cordiale. Non dovrebbe essere aggressivo verso i cani e MAI aggressivo verso gli esseri umani. loro sono dei grandi compagni e riescono a misurasi con la maggior parte degli stili di vita.

5) Ci sono molti modi per alimentare un cane…lei cosa usa?
I miei cani mangiano crocchette senza cereali e, a rotazione, cibo crudo precedentemente congelato e una ricetta cucinata.
6) Riuscirebbe a fare il punto sulla razza? Ci sono degli aspetti da migliorare ed altri a cui fare attenzione?
Negli Stati Uniti, mi piacerebbe vedere l’eliminazione della divisione del peso nelle classi e che gli allevatori lavorino su una taglia più uniforme.
Credo che lo Standard BTCA dovrebbe essere più seguito in tutto il mondo, dal momento che gli USA sono il paese d’origine del Boston Terrier.

7) Cosa si sentirebbe di consigliare a chi vorrebbe allevare questa razza?
Si dovrebbe iniziare con il meglio, genitori testati per la salute e con buon temperamento. Non seguire troppo i cani super vincenti o che sono diventati degli stalloni molto popolari. Bisognerebbe trovare una linea di bostons che ammiriamo e chiediamo al loro allevatore di diventare il nostro mentore. Ascoltare quello che suggerisce il vostro mentore per quanto riguarda l'allevamento. testate i vostri cani da dall’inizio per quanto riguarda la salute.
8) I suoi progetti per il futuro?
Sto lavorando conseguire dei campionati con Eugene: Weywood Fortune Knocks e Edie: Weywood Fortune Teller Fame. Stiamo aspettando pazientemente per la maturazione di Edison e Eugene, speriamo che diventino dei grandi e speciali cani. Inoltre ho un paio di cucciolate in programma per l’autunno.

1) First of all, it’s my pleasure to interview you. Let’s start from the beginning. Tell us your story, when and how did you fall in love with the BT breed?
I was fortunate to have been born into a family of Boston terriers lovers. I am the four generation in my family to own this wonderful breed. My Great
Grandmother bred bostons in the 1920's I am hopeful that my children will carry on the Weywood name. For as long as I can remember there has always
been a boston in my life.
2) When did you start breeding? Which ones were your first dogs for shows and reproduction?
I got my very own boston, Jade in 1996. She was was not a show dog but she was a huge part of our family. She loved babies and was here to welcome each of children home from the hospital. I grew up showing and breeding horses and goats. I missed the competition and the challenge of breeding beautiful animals to show. In 1998, I acquired a male bred by Karen Bogenholm. His name was Bobby, Ch. Kc's High Faluten Captain. He was my foundation male. In 1999, acquired a beautiful brindle female, Mibolynn's Audrey H. of Weywood. Audrey was eventually bred Bobby and that was the start of the Weywood line of bostons. My first bred by champion was Ch. Weywood's Chanilly Lace, a Bobby x Audrey daughter.
3) In your opinion, what are the strength and weakness of the breed?
I think that in since I began exhibiting the rears are much stronger and fronts are much better. It is great to see more people health testing.
When I got into breeding baer and JHC test were not available or very difficult to find. Very few "long time breeders" Cerf'd or did patella exams. I feel that the breeders need to continue their work on the structure of the boston but need to focus a bit more on producing the correct head and eye. There are very few bostons with the correct head and eye. You very seldom see the Large dark round eye. Most bostons are lacking depth of stop and width of muzzle.
4) What advice would you give to the person that approaches this breed for the very first time?
This is a companion breed and bostons should be a lively and friendly breed. They should not be aggressive toward dogs and NEVER aggressive toward humans. They make great companions and fit most lifestyles.
5) There are many ways to feed your dog. What kind of food do you use?
My dogs eat a grain free kibble with rotations of freeze dried raw and a cooked recipe.
6) Could you give us a general look on the breed? Are there any aspects to improve and others to pay attention at?
In the USA, I would like to see an elimination of weight division in the classes and the breeders work on a more uniform size.
I feel that the BTCA standard should be followed world wide, since the USA is the Boston Terriers country of origin.
7) What would you say to someone that would like to start breeding Boston Terriers?
You should start with the best, health tested parents with good temperaments. Do not go with the top winning or popular sire.
Find a line of bostons that you admire and ask that breeder to mentor you. Do what that mentor suggests in regards to breeding. Health test your dogs from the very beginning.
8) Any projects for the future?
I am working of putting champion titles on Eugene, Weywood Fortune Knocks and Edie, Weywood Fortune Teller Fame. We are patiently waiting for Edison and Eugene to mature, hopefully the will become great specials dogs. I have a few breedings planned for the fall.
