...in questi anni di BostonOssessione, ho avuto l'onore ed il piacere di conoscere, seppur virtualmente, molti stimati e famosi allevatori da tutto il mondo. Ho domandato ad alcuni di loro, di avere la possibilità di poterli intervistare, parlandoci appunto della razza e, molti di loro hanno accettato con entusiasmo di collaborare a questo mio progetto, così ogni mese pubblicherò la rubrica: "L'allevatore del mese"!

1) Innanzitutto grazie, è un piacere ed un onore poterla intervistare! Direi di cominciare dal principio…ci racconti un po’ la sua storia, come e quando si è appassionato alla razza?
Ho avuto molte diverse razze nel corso degli anni. Fosse stato per me e mia sorella avremmo portato a casa ogni randagio trovato per strada. Un giorno, ero in visita a casa di una persona che aveva un Boston. Il cane balzò in piedi sulle mie ginocchia e cominciò a baciare il mio viso! Da quel momento, m’innamorai subito della razza e sapevo che dovevo avere uno. La ricerca cominciò. Questo avveniva nel 1985.
2) Quando invece ha deciso di allevare? Quali sono stati i suoi primi cani da show e da riproduzione?
Iniziai a frequentare le esposizioni canine alla fine degli anni '80. La prima grande mostra canina che andai a visitare fu in occasione della celebrazione del 100° anniversario della National Specialty a Cape Cod, (Massachusetts, Stati Uniti d'America), e dove abbiamo celebrato i 100 anni della razza Boston Terrier! All’epoca avevo un semplice Bostons da compagnia, ma volevo migliorare la qualità dei miei cani. Così ho guardato per 5 giorni, osservando e studiando Bostons provenienti da tutto il mondo. Ho preso appunti e scelsi gli allevatori i cui cani mi avevano impressionato. Alcuni allevatori erano disposti ad aiutarmi, altri invece non lo erano. In seguito ho acquistato tre belle cucciole dall’allevamento “Davane” e un bel maschietto dall’allevamento “Brandy”. Tom e Joyce Davis dell’allevamento “Davane” (Pennsylvania) sono stati davvero molto utili per me. Sapevano che ero seriamente interessata ad esporre ed allevare questa razza. Ed io ero molto grata per il loro aiuto. Acquistai solamente cani che mi erano piaciuti molto e poi ho cominciai il mio programma di allevamento...qualcosa era scattato!

3) Secondo lei quali sono i punti di forza ed i punti di debolezza di questa razza?
Spesso si dice che tutti Bostons si assomigliano....invece è tutt'altro! In realtà sono tutti diversi dalla testa ai piedi! Il mio grande cruccio sono proprio i difetti delle zampe, dita lunghe e metacarpi deboli. Invece, per mia figlia di Sarah, il suo cruccio è una brutta schiena, in particolare quando la parte posteriore va verso l’alto e poi le zampe anteriori che guardano verso l’esterno (vaccinismo).
4) Quali consigli può dare a chi si avvicina per la prima volta ai BT?
Per saperne di più su questa razza fate varie ricerche e frequentate alcune mostre canine. Siate pazienti ad aspettare di trovare il cucciolo giusto. Cercate un buon allevatore che vi aiuterà , ma non uno che voglia comandarvi. Dovrete inoltre sapere che, quando si acquista un cucciolo non vi è alcuna garanzia sul fatto che diventi un soggetto da show. Se si vuole essere sicuri, meglio comprare un giovane adulto, se possibile, in questo modo saprete con certezza cosa avrete in mano, ma in questo modo vi priverete del divertimento di allevare un cucciolo. Iniziate con un buona femmina o maschio privi di difetti estetici gravi. Dovrete inoltre studiare e conoscere i pedigree. Se si sta iniziando un programma di allevamento, non vorrete certo iniziare con soggetti con difetti che vi porterete dietro per le generazioni a venire. Per esempio se deciderete di utilizzare un maschio che ha le orecchie tagliate, prima fate una ricerca sugli antenati di questo cane per vedere che tipo di orecchie avevano. Se siete contrari ad amputare le orecchie e non volete orecchie grandi nel vostro programma di allevamento, passate oltre. A me piace un bel orecchio naturale ben inserito, in cima ad una testa elegante. Un buon temperamento dovrebbe essere un "Must" ed anch'esso verrà trasmesso alla prole.

5) Ci sono molti modi per alimentare un cane…lei cosa usa?
Ho usato Purina per molti anni. Mi piace Pro-Plan e non ho mai avuto problemi. Sono andata in uno stabilimento Purina ed ho visitato il loro impianto. Sono rimasta molto colpita. Se trovate un metodo che funziona, attenetevi ad esso.
6) Riuscirebbe a fare il punto sulla razza? Ci sono degli aspetti da migliorare ed altri a cui fare attenzione?
Un cane dovrebbe avere delle buone spalle e un bel collo arcuato. La testa non dovrebbe essere come quella di un Carlino, ma deve un buono stop, un muso quadrato, senza rughe o giogaia. Il Boston deve avere un buon movimento e non solo un bel muso. Un buon passo e conduzione del cane è un must per far muovere correttamente un Boston. Per vincere nelle mostre canine ogni cane dovrebbe "fluttuare" distinguendosi così nei rings. Il cane dovrebbe avere una buona linea superiore, zampe anteriori dritte, non deviate verso l'esterno. Dei bei occhi tondi, e non di colore chiaro. Una buona intersezione delle orecchie non è sul lato della testa, ma verso gli angoli superiori. Sento di molti giudici che ancora non conoscono la nostra razza abbastanza bene per giudicarla. Personalmente non mi sentirei mai di giudicare una razza che non conosco bene sia "dentro che fuori".

7) Cosa si sentirebbe di consigliare a chi vorrebbe allevare questa razza?
Se volete allevare questa razza, dovrete essere pronti a mettere il cuore, l'anima ed il vostro tempo. Preparatevi inoltre per molte notti insonni. Avere un buon veterinario sarà un must., il quale dovrebbe esattamente sapere come fare un cesareo. Egli dovrà essere sempre a vostra disposizione giorno e notte, 7 giorni alla settimana. Organizzatevi per bene in anticipo poichè altrimenti sarete nervosi senza una pianificazione adeguata. Ricordatevi di iniziare con una buona cagna ed un buon stallone che siano stati precedentemente testati per la salute.

8) I suoi progetti per il futuro?
In questo momento abbiamo un nostro cane che sta uscendo in gara: Ch. Kennedy's Bumble Bee. Egli sarà presentato da Tina Starr (titolare dell'affisso IvyLane). Il padre è il nostro BISS Am, Can Ch. Kennedy tuckered by the Storm. Suo nonno invece è BISS Am, Can Ch. Kennedy Storm Watch Bramley. Bumble ha già prodotto alcuni cuccioli molto belli che stanno già facendo bene sui vari rings. Vedremo cosa ci riserverà il futuro...

1) First of all, it’s my pleasure to interview you. Let’s start from the beginning. Tell us your story, when and how did you fall in love with the BT breed?
I’ve had many different breeds over the years. My sister and I would bring home every stray we found. One day, I was visiting someone who had a Boston. She jumped up on my lap and started kissing my face! At that very moment, I was in love with the breed and knew that I had to have one. The search was on. That was back in 1985.
2) When did you start breeding? Which ones were your first dogs for shows and breeding?
I starting attending dog shows in the late 80‘s. The first big dog show I entered was the 100th anniversary National Specialty in Cape Cod Massachusetts, USA, we celebrated 100 years of the Boston Terrier. I had pet Bostons and wanted to improve the quality of my dogs. I watched for 5 days, observing & studying Bostons from all over the world. I took notes and picked out the breeders whose dogs impressed me. Some breeders were willing to help us and others were not. I purchased three very nice pups from Davane Kennels and a nice male out of Brandy’s Bostons. Tom and Joyce Davis of Davane Kennels in Pennsylvania was very helpful. They knew that i was very serious about showing and breeding. i was very thankful for there help. I only bought what i really liked and began my breeding program. It Clicked!
3) In your opinion, what are the strength and weakness of the breed?
People often say that all Bostons look alike. That is far from it ! They are all different from head to toe. My big pet peeve is bad feet, with long toes, and weak pasterns. My daughter Sarah’s pet peeve is a bad top-line, especially one that goes high in the rear and fronts that are easty-westy.
4) What advice would you give to the person that approaches this breed for the very first time?
Learn as much about the breed by doing research and attending dog shows. Be patient and wait for the right pup. Find a good breeder who will help you, but not control you. They need to know when you buy a young pup there is no guarantee that it will be show pup. If you want to be sure, buy a young adult if possible, then you will know what you are getting, but it does take the fun out of raising a puppy. Start off with a good female or male free of serious faults. Know the pedigree. If you’re just starting a breeding program, you don't want to start off with breeding faults that will last for generations to come. For instance if you breed to a male that has cropped ears, research to see what kind of ears are in the back ground. If you don't like cropping you don't want big ears in your breeding program, it will be past on. I myself like a nice natural ear that are on top of the head and elegant. Good temperament is a must and that will also be passed on.
5) There are many ways to feed your dog. What kind of food do you use?
I have used Purina for many years. I like Pro-Plan and I have never had a problem with it. If you find a food that works, stick to it. I went out to Purina Farms and visited their facility. I was very impressed.
6) Could you give us a general look on the breed? Are there any aspects to improve and others to pay attention at?
A dog should have good shoulders and a nice arched neck. The head should not be Pug like but have a good stop, a square muzzle, without long flews or jowls. A Boston has to have good movement and not just a pretty face. Good reach and drive is a must for a Boston to move correctly. Every dog that moves around that ring should float and stand out so as to ask for the win. The dog should have a nice top line, a straight front, not toeing out. A pretty, soft round eye, that is not light in color. An ear set that is not on the side of the head but at the top corners. I feel many judges still do not know our breed well enough to judge. I would never want to judge a breed that I did not know inside and out.
7) What would you say to someone that would like to start breeding Boston Terriers?
Be ready to put your heart, soul, and time into it. Be prepared for many sleepless nights. A good vet is a must. Your vet should know how to do a C-Section. He should always be available day or night 7 days a week. Plan ahead as you will be nervous without proper planing. Start out with a good bitch and stud that have been both been health tested.
8) Any projects for the future?
We have a nice special coming out, Ch. Kennedy’s Bumble Bee. He will be presented by Tina Starr of Ivy Lane Kennels. He is out of my BISS Am,Can Ch Kennedy’s Tuckered By the Storm. His grand sire is BISS Am Can Ch Kennedy’s Storm Watch Bramley. Bumble has been producing some very nice puppies that are already doing well in the ring. We shall see what the future brings.
